I'll be the first to admit that running outside in a Michigan winter can really suck, but I derive a pleasure from being the only one braving the elements and tackling unshoveled sidewalks.
I think that I'm tough when I run outside. Maybe I am, because having wet feet, sticky arms, and cold legs is no fun when it's in the teens. And, I think I've developed a resolve to get out there and be tough...no matter what. This resolve was non-existent before you invited me to run the 2005 Detroit half, so thank you.
What does a 30 minute jaunt in wind and snow do for one's soul?
Well, for starters, it's really quiet. There is a beautiful hush when everything is covered in snow and I enjoy turning off the iPOD to hear snow crunching beneath my feet.
Secondly, the outside is deserted in winter. It's too cold for most people, and even colder for teenage punks. The lack of people also contributes to the quiet. Having this feeling that there is all of this...space...to yourself is fantastic.
Thirdly, my cheeks and nose turn this really cute pink color when I'm running outside in winter. And I'm all about maximizing my cuteness.
That being said, winter running requires extra safety. So, be safe and enjoy the great chilly outdoors!
